Opportunity

Efficient public transportation is the lifeline of urban existence.

  • Public transportation is the backbone of a city. It’s what connects its dwellers throughout the manmade land it has to offer. Yet little do we know that in some of the most popular cities in the world, a slime mold Physarum is behind the efficiencies of their railway network.

RESEARCH

Slime mold optimizes networks, mirroring urban challenges.

  • When Physarum polycephalum, a slime mold often found inside decaying logs, discovers bacteria or spores, it grows over them and begins to digest them through its body. To continue growing and exploring, the slime mold transforms its Byzantine pattern of thin tendrils into a simpler, more-efficient network of tubes, ultimately becoming the best natural engineers.

From forest floor to future city, experience the journey of cities’ unsung natural engineer.

RESULTS

  • This exhibit captures the scientific intricacies of this natural phenomenon but also translate its significance into a compelling narrative for the general public about the remarkable problem-solving abilities of Physarum slime mold and how it has inspired advancements in transportation systems.

There’s an untapped potential IN NATURE THAT is the solution to innovation.

BEHIND THE DESIGN

MOODBOARD

Inspired by the biomimicry of slime mold, this exhibit explores the intersection of nature and urban planning. By overlaying cityscapes with natural elements, I aim to visually represent the symbiotic relationship between organic systems and human infrastructure, basically showcasing the echoes of nature in the future of urban design.

The exhibit also incorporates a consistent use of paths, lines, and geometric shapes, mirroring the intricate networks formed by slime mold and modern transportation systems.
