Opportunity

Colorism, a subtle form of discrimination based on skin tone, subtly persists in modern society.

  • Despite society’s attempts to move forward from its discriminating historical roots in regards to skin color, it systemically still manages to subtly reinforce negative connotations to specific appearances across the color spectrum. Whether it be within the commercial industry to peer practices, colorism is embedded into modern day products and behaviors more than we think.

RESEARCH

Historical and cultural factors have contributed to global colorism, shaping beauty standards, socioeconomic behavior.

  • In East Asia, their preference towards lighter skin originated from classist assumptions between sun exposure, darkness, and labor which ultimately led to the subconscious insecurity over being tan. Similarly, in South Asia, classism is related to its colonization by Britain and thus led to a superior title with Western features including lighter skin. Then within the Americas, skin superiority comes from the context of slavery, however, in the present day, there’s also a disdain for the other side of the spectrum for being ‘too light’ or perceived as an ‘albino’ which then led to a surge and desire for tanning products. Across the world, there is a history of colorism that affects the perceptions and biases of today that modern companies unfortunately use such insecurities to profit from.

This book uncovers the hidden impact of colorism through personal stories to challenge societal norms and highlight its manipulative nature.
