OPPORTUNITY

Despite society’s attempts to move forward from its discriminating historical roots in regards to skin color, it systemically still manages to subtly reinforce negative connotations to specific appearances across the color spectrum. Whether it be within the commercial industry to peer practices, colorism is embedded into modern day products and behaviors more than we think.

INSIGHT

In East Asia, their preference towards lighter skin originated from classist assumptions between sun exposure, darkness, and labor which ultimately led to the subconscious insecurity over being tan. Similarly, in South Asia, classism is related to its colonization by Britain and thus led to a superior title with Western features including lighter skin. Then within the Americas, skin superiority comes from the context of slavery, however, in the present day, there’s also a disdain for the other side of the spectrum for being ‘too light’ or perceived as an ‘albino’ which then led to a surge and desire for tanning products. Across the world, there is a history of colorism that affects the perceptions and biases of today that modern companies unfortunately use such insecurities to profit from.

RESULTS

This publication reveals the pockets of colorism in everyday life through snapshot stories inspired by real-life accounts as a more experiential take on how these shortcomings leave an impact on an individual’s identity and self-esteem. These stories will emphasize how something that can seem so minor to one individual because they’re constantly being catered to is quite manipulative to.

Traces of colorism in today’s society are sly and hushed. Stir your soul to see how these microaggressions actually causes a major impact in a person’s life.

COLOR STORIES

Stories are written in letter format to the reader as if it was their friend sharing their heart-tugging experience with colorism in the industry. These written accounts will start relatively light-hearted at first as a typical catch-up, but as readers go ‘deeper’ into these packaged stories is the truth of how the writer is really doing.
